STORY PREVIEW

Sly O Sub is an amusingly delightful story for kids ages three through nine. As a former substitute teacher, I witnessed firsthand how students interrupted the class flow when they tricked the substitute teacher into believing that they were ill and needed to go to the nurse’s office or bathroom just to get out of class. Never try to trick a Sly O Sub!!! SOS!

Ms. Fox arrived in Mrs. Wise’s classroom at 11:30 a.m. sharp.
The morning sub, Ms. Abner, was stressed out and eager to leave.
“You have your work cut out for you while Mrs. Wise is on Vacation.” Ms. Abner whispered.
“Please don’t worry about a thing,” Ms. Fox replied. “Everything will be fine.”

“They were terrible in the lunchroom and wild at recess,” Ms. Abner whispered. “Most of all, they refused to read books and would not do their spelling words. By the way, they have already had a restroom break.”

“Voices off!” Ms. Fox said in a soft but firm tone. “My name is Ms. Fox, and I
will be your sub for a few days. Students, I expect you all to be orderly and well-behaved.”
Many students smirked and continued chatting.
“Subs are dumber than stumps,” a feisty boy whispered.
“Ms. Fox looks older than dirt and is turtle-slow.”
Several students at the back table played noisy games on electronic devices.

Ms. Fox was appalled at their disrespectful attitudes.
“Voices off, please!” she asked. “Please turn off those devices.
We are here to learn.”
She gently clapped her hands to get their attention.
Z’nia and James ignored her and munched loudly on crunchy chips.
